The snooker world ranking system is an official list that ranks players by their recent performance. It is administered and maintained by the World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association. Each ranking series event is updated with this listing. To be eligible for the World Snooker Tour, players must hold a current ranking in snooker. Seeding is determined by players' performance in particular tournaments.
The snooker world rankings were established based on results from three World Championships, the World Open, UK Championship and the Professional Players Tournament. Each of these events had a winner who was given one seed. The runner-ups got two. The World Championship was the only ranked event from 1976 to 1982. However, in 1982, the International Open became the fourth ranking event. As competition grew, so did the number of tournaments.
The World Championship knockout format was also reintroduced during this period. This was considered the start of modern snooker. Most records are now based on records that date back to 1969. There are currently 31 titles on this snooker rankings list.
